I’m not artsy craftsy… I’m not good with a needle and thead – as a matter of fact, I don’t think I have ever used them except on skin – but my boy’s first cognizant Redskins football game required something drastic – something memorable.
Many moons ago at Redskins training camp, I met a friend – and I met him because his little boy was running around in the cutest pair of Redskins overalls that I had ever seen. His mom made them for him. Jackson was the happiest kid at Redskins Park that day, and probably because he looked the coolest.
So fast forward ten years to this past week. I’m sitting there trying to think what I can do for Tommy that will make his first Redskins experience a special one. The overalls spring to mind.
I grab some of my older, less worn Redskins gear and I start to hack it to pieces. It hurt. A lot. It felt so wrong. But I soldiered on. I was left with a series of crests and insignias and all I needed now was a bit of motivation and some ingenuity – and by ingenuity, I mean good old-fashioned laziness that breeds invention.
Cue the fabric glue. Oh my goodness, where have you been all my life sweet, sweet fabric glue?
I commenced the addition of stuff! I was patient and put on one item at a time, and used something heavy on top of it to make sure the glue held well while drying.
I have to admit that I started to get a bit excited right away, and waiting for the glue to dry each time was a bit of a problem. Luckily, we invented beer for such occasions.
I didn’t want it to be ALL stuff that I had taken from other gear, so I wrote a couple of things on them as well so that they would have a bit more of a homemade feel to them. There’s the RGIII on the pant leg, and the Go Skins on the back – no stencils were used either – I wanted it to look a little less’ polished’.
When I was done, I have to admit that I gave myself a little bit of a pat on the back. I may have never made anything in my life – but I think these turned out pretty good.
Tommy saw them already unfortunately. He went bat snot crazy. Wore them on Saturday. Wore them on Sunday. I think he would wear them every day if I let him.
That’s worth every minute that went into them and more.
As Tommy would say…
