Redskins Get Much Needed Secondary Help

news and informationbusiness,health,entertainment,technology

The Redskins have signed cornerback Chris Culliver to a four year deal.

Four signings, four defensive players – the message is clear.

Culliver instantly improves the secondary, and was sought after by several teams in free agency. His deal is reported to be worth $14-16 Million in guaranteed money, with over $30 Million potential.

Last year was Culliver’s best season as a pro, with four interceptions, 14 pass break-ups, and 45 tackles – a tremendous response to his 2013 season, which was completely lost due to a torn anterior cruciate. The 6-foot, 200 pound defensive back was drafted by the 49ers in the third round of the 2011 draft.

Culliver has had some trouble off the field, with a controversial anti-gay remark, and then a hit-and-run incident last year. He issued an apology after his remark, and underwent sensitivity training, and the Redskins appear to have done due diligence and deemed any potential personal issues as irrelevant or non-existent.

He will certainly help them on the field. He has experience both inside and out, and at 26 years old, should be in the prime of his career.

The secondary is still a big question mark, with DeAngelo Hall’s Achilles injury, David Amerson’s sometimes inconsistent play, and the reliance on second year player Bashaud Breeland. But it definitely just got better, with the addition of Culliver.

With the new additions on defense, Scot McCloughan certainly seems to be executing a conservative, but calculated plan. He has much work to do, but he is accomplishing a great deal. Less than a week into free agency, holes have been filled, and intelligently.

The newest Redskin said it best in a tweet:

Hail to the Redskins.
