Throwback Thursday – Lombardi and Jurgensen Beat Noll’s Steelers

news and informationbusiness,health,entertainment,technology

It was on this day, October 26th in 1969, that a Redskins team coached by the late, great Vince Lombardi defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 14-7.

Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen scored both Redskin touchdowns, one with his feet, and one with his arm. The second, a 17 yard pass to Charley Taylor.

The Steelers were coached by the great Chuck Noll, who would obviously go on to legendary coaching status almost akin to Lombardi’s.

The win put the Redskins at 4-1-1, but they would fade slightly over the back half of the season, and finish up with a 7-5-2 record in Lombardi’s one season as coach. Regardless, it was their best finish in 14 years and grounds for optimism.

Unfortunately Lombardi would succumb to colon cancer before the 1970 season began. The progress he made in just one season as coach and general manager laid much of the groundwork for the success that the Redskins would have in the 70s under coach George Allen.

Lombardi was the greatest coach in the history of football – arguably in all of sports.

Hail to Vince Lombardi.
