  • Another Washington Redskins Season Is Upon Us

With more than thirty Redskins seasons under my belt, I am still always surprised at my level of anticipation in the week immediately preceding opening day. In the world before the internet – that did exist as hard as it may be for some of you to fathom – opening day for this Canadian lad, meant little more than sitting on the edge of a seat, anxiously awaiting the first glimpse at all the shiny new toys that you read about in the Street & Smith the month before. That’s if I had the good grace that the game was on television, which was more of an exception, than the norm anyway.

With the internet, came access. Slowly but surely those dark days between the last game and the next first game got shorter and shorter. Tapping into the Redskins matrix myself in 2002 with this site, meant not only getting more plugged in, but ultimately more plugged in than I could have ever really imagined. And that “offseason” got shorter and shorter. In the early days it was just draft coverage. Then it moved to draft and combine coverage, and expanded further still into player analysis of all draft eligibles, and the list went on and on and on. Eventually it reached the point where there just wasn’t an offseason. Read the rest of this entry »

    Game Thoughts: Redskins v. Buccaneers

The Redskins finished up the preseason with a 24-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and finished with a (completely irrelevant) 3-1 record. While the result and record may be insignificant in the broadest of schemes, the game meant everything to many of the Redskins who played – guys fighting for their NFL lives. Who helped or hurt themselves?

Here are ten guys that helped themselves: Read the rest of this entry »

    Meriweather Suspended Two Games

Brandon Meriweather has been suspended for the first two games of the regular season for his “sixth violation of the unnecessary roughness rule”.

Meriweather was flagged for a 15 yard personal foul penalty, for hitting a defenseless receiver (Torrie Smith) in the 2nd quarter of Saturday’s preseason game against the Ravens.

Personally I think the decision is tough, because Smith went down to catch the ball, but Meriweather did lead with his head, and he has to learn to keep his head up when he tackles. His only option was to not make the play and concede the catch, but its a decision he is obviously going to have to learn to make.

Because the suspension really hurts the team. Especially on opening day.

    Five Quick Game Thoughts: Ravens

It’s hard to glean much from any NFL preseason game – the stakes are low, and often the tempo and crispness of the game is fractionally lower; but there are things you can look at, and over-analyze, because that’s the modern day sports arena! Here are some quick hitters about the Washington Redskins 23-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night at M&T Bank Stadium:

    1. Jason Hatcher is Legit
Arguably the season’s most important offseason acquisition, Hatcher wasted no time in establishing that he was “as advertised” in his first action of the season. On just his second play in the burgundy and gold, Hatcher bull-rushed his way to Joe Flacco for a 12-yard sack; he made Pro Bowl guard Marshal Yanda look pedestrian at best. Despite offseason knee surgery, and not playing in the first two preseason games, the former Cowboys’ defensive end was solid, and gave Redskins fans a glimpse of what he brings to the table, and the incredible versatility that it gives Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett in defensive packages. Hatcher also played 17 snaps, despite only being slated for 10 – a positive sign that his knee is doing well. Read the rest of this entry »

    ICYMI: April 6th

This is a new blog segment at THn that I’m going to unimaginatively call ICYMI, which ICYMI, is an acronym for in case you missed it.

The idea being that we all lead busy lives and can’t possibly stay up on EVERYTHING going on in the Redskins Nation – not without a little help. Hopefully this blog will occasionally help you do that. It won’t concentrate on the big burgundy and gold news, but that doesn’t make it any less crucial to the avid B&G bleeder.

Let’s start with the obvious… Read the rest of this entry »
