I’m worried. I’m uncharacteristically optimistic. That frightens me, a bit.

Yesterday evening, the Eagles and Redskins finalized a deal, sending future Hall of Fame quarterback, Donovan McNabb to the Redskins in exchange for the 37th pick this year, and the Redskins’ 4 round pick next year (3rd round of certain performance measures are reached by McNabb). Rule Tinkering… Bad for Football

This is NOT about the Redskins loss to the Detroit Lions… they did not deserve to win that game… while there were bad calls that influenced the outcome, a good team does not let the game fall into the hands of the officials to begin with.

It’s probably happened for much of the league’s history, but sometime, probably in the early 70’s, the league decided that NFL offenses needed help.  Rather than waiting for the coaching form of natural selection to slowly work it’s evolutionary magic, the league decided to ban the bump and run technique that had begun to shut down many NFL passing attacks.  They knocked over a domino that began a chain reaction of increasingly complicated and situationally specific rule changes designed to increase scoring by hamstringing defenses.

I think it’s responsible for the incredibly complicated situation that NFL game officials find themselves in today… resulting in incredible inconsistency of officiating, missed calls, bad calls, blown calls… many of which are changing the outcomes of games.

Natural selection works in building coaching philosophies… there is forever a swinging pendulum of offensive dominance, to defensive dominance, and back again… the league erred in attempting to disrupt that swinging pendulum… and made a huge mess of the lot of the NFL Official…

Want to fix it? BACK OFF… make tactics such as bump and run legal again… let the brilliant offensive coaching minds figure out how to beat it…

They figured out how to beat the Tampa 2 without league help…

The NFL needs to simply stop tinkering… let the game be the game.  The product that was on NFL fields in 1970 may not have been of the “quality” of the teams taking the fields today… but the game was a whole lot more pure… and officials made fewer mistakes… because their rulebook was simple…  clean… uncomplicated.

    The Future “Beloved” Daniel Snyder???

    Posted from Curmudgeon Corner, Maine

Much discussion about General Managers on Redskins fan boards these days… it’s pretty much a (note: I said “a” not “the”) common denominator. Read the rest of this entry »

    Brrrrrr… It's cold in Denver…

    Posted from Curmudgeon Corner, Maine.

It’s official. The National Sports Media’s “Jim Zorn Getting’ Fired” Vigil has officially begun. When a Redskins1 sighting in Denver began a feeding frenzy of undercover press stakeouts outside the home of Mike Shanahan, the drooling over the still conscious body of the Redskins coach moved into high gear. So, this chunk of blue stuff hits me on the head…

    Posted from Curmudgeon Corner, Maine.

Ouch… you call that a “get right game?”

Can it possibly be as bad as it seems? 3 weeks ago, I was ok… they didn’t look great against the Giants, but, what the heck… I didn’t actually expect them to win at Rutherford, now did I? Last week… a win that was as close to a failure as a win can possibly be. The Ram’s “ineptitude” was exceeded only by that of the Lions, yet we were but an interception away from being down 10-9 at the end of the game. Real questions began to arise about Zorn’s competence as a play caller. I’m left anxious about the next game with the Lions, especially in light of the fast start the Lions had against the Vikes.

Today… disaster. I have seen Chicken Little… and he looks an awful lot like someone I know. Read the rest of this entry »

    Musings from Curmudgeon Corner, 10/27/09

Maybe I should be posting from the Peoples Republic of FedEx Field?

Dan Steinberg’s “DC Sports Bog” (before you get any ideas, that is exactly how he spells it) tells the tale of Danny’s trashing of old policies, pretty clearly in an attempt to prevent fan opinion from being expressed on national TV. What the heck is with that???? He apparently had guards enforcing the new “No Signs” policy, that according to one fan, permitted signs as of Sunday night, per Redskins.com. However, by the time he reached the field, the rule had been changed. Perhaps Komrad Snyder has thin skin, no? Read the rest of this entry »

Of Gun Slingers and Mojo Lost

    Shudder…

     I have this recurring nightmare.

Ford Stadium is rocking.  Redskins ball, third down, 9 yards to go. The thunderous voices of all 6542 Lions fans in the house are drowning out Jason Campbell’s efforts to audible out of the option pass called by coach.  Sonny is in the booth screaming “It won’t work!”  Sam Huff chuckles “He’ll bench you, Sonny”.

The ball is snapped anyway… ughhhhhhh…  Read the rest of this entry »

    Musings from Curmudgeon Corner 11/23/09

    Posted from Curmudgeon Corner, Maine

I have no idea what to think. My Redskins just held to Cowboys to 7 points. My Redskins carried a lead into the fourth quarter, against the Cowboys, at their house. I should be happy.  Yet, I find myself wondering “so, what?”

The problem was, that lead consisted of 6 points.  Six lousy points, on two field goals.  I can’t entirely blame Zorn, this time.  The patched up offensive line took another blow, with the loss for the year of yet another lineman.  The second string running back, who had knocked them dead last week with a clutch performance, went down with a season ending knee injury. There's an App for That!

The Washington Redskins have announced that they have teamed with Brain-Soft, a McLean, VA software developer to create and market an i-Phone application intended to assist fans in attendance at the game to actually call the next play! The app is intended not only to call offensive plays, but the defense as well… Read the rest of this entry »
