Redskins Retain Albright, Re-Sign Westbrook, Claim Alridge, Release Plackemeier

On Friday the Redskins announced they had re-signed long snapper Ethan Albright, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

Albright has been the model of consistency since his arrival in Washington in 2001. Known for his accuracy and speed on his snaps and solid blocking, he made his first appearance in the Pro Bowl last February.

The Redskins also continued to shake up the special teams with the release of punter Ryan Plackemeier on Thursday. The former Ray Guy Award winner was inconsistent as the replacement of, the then reigning Ray Guy Award winner, Durant Brooks. He finished second to last in the NFL among kickers with at least 20 punts for the 2008 season.

That leaves the Redskins with one punter currently on the roster. Zac Atterberry was signed in January and it is expected the team will sign another punter to challenge him for a spot in training camp this summer.

In another move yesterday, the team claimed running back Anthony Alridge off of waivers from the Denver Broncos. According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Minnesota Vikings also placed a waiver claim on him but due to the Redskins having the worst record of the two (8-8 as opposed to Minnesota’s 10-6), the Redskins were awarded the services of the former Houston Cougar star.

Similar to Dominique Dorsey, Alridge could provide a unique dynamic to the Redskins in the form of another speedy, small tailback.

Alridge joined the league in 2008 as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos and was placed on Injured Reserve with a left-foot injury following cuts to form the 53-man roster.

Earlier this week the Redskins also re-signed cornerback Byron Westbrook, who has spent the past two seasons on the practice squad. His practice squad contract had expired, which made him a free agent.

By The Numbers: Rams

Some weeks, the numbers are a little harder to look at than others, like this week’s from Washington’s 19-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams. The numbers don’t make the loss any easier to swallow, but misery loves company… Read the rest of this entry »

Lucky Underwear 1, Saints 0

Okay, so I know what happened here.  I wrote about how Durant Brooks did so well last week, taking that shot to the groin and all, he read it, got all cocky, and went out and had a bad week.  My fault.  However, it’s a good thing I was wearing my lucky underwear to help the Redskins pull out the win.  I forgot to wear my lucky underwear last week, and look what happened.  So far, my lucky underwear is 1-0 versus the spread.

And just a quick note to my friends at DirecTV.  I pay you two hundred fifty some-odd dollars for my Sunday Ticket subscription.  I pay you ten some-odd dollars  a month for my HD service.  And now you want me to pay ANOTHER one hundred some-odd dollars to get my Sunday Ticket games in HD with your ‘SuperFan’ offering?!?  Have you gone mad?!?  How many ways can you possibly screw me out of more of my hard-earned some-odd dollars?!?

And now back to our regular programming (which is probably slighty more random than usual, given that I was irrate and distracted for most of the first half, after learning that I could not watch my game in HD)….
