Interview with Doc Walker: Part 1

The University of Maryland hosted a sports injury symposium at Knight Hall Wednesday night titled “Sports Injuries: the Risks of Playing the Game from Kids to the Pros.” Among those in attendance were Dr. Stephen Haas, a retired physician for the Wizards, Capitals and Nationals, Sean Sansiveri, NFL Players Association Staff Council; Scott Hallenbeck, Executive Director of USA Football; Katie O’Donnell, 2009 National Field Hockey player of the Year from the University of Maryland; Mark Hyman, author of “Until it Hurts” and adjunct professor at George Washington University; and former Washington Redskins tight end and current ESPN 980 and Comcast SportsNet media personality, Rick “Doc” Walker.

Following the event, I had the chance to speak with Doc about a wide range of topics. In the first of a three-part interview series, Doc talks about his post-career injuries, the Catch-22 that NFL players face with concussions and job security, expanding NFL rosters, his dislike of the Scouting Combine, and whether the 49ers should trade for Darelle Revis.

Father of a Former Redskin… Or Hulk Hogan???

In the idea of lifting up the spirits of Redskins Nation after a frustrating loss, I figured a little humor was needed.

We all know how 2009 turned out but I figure I’ll give you all a bit of a flashback… in a good way. This time in the form of former Redskins punter Glenn Pakulak.

Pakulak, as you all remember, filled in for starter Hunter Smith when he was injured in mid-October and appeared in two games (Oct. 11 vs. Carolina and October 18th vs. Kansas City).

What does Pakulak have to do with the Skins now? Nothing really. But it’s never a bad time to blog about a former punter just days after your current punter hurts his hip in pregame warmups.

Leftovers – Week 7

Here are this week’s leftovers from THN Weekly with Andre Carter.

THN: Haynesworth apparently left to go to the locker room with about 25 seconds left in the game but he was also the one guy to make his voice heard and try to motivate guys and get them to step their game up after the game. Is that true? If so, why did he leave so early and what did he say? Read the rest of this entry »

A Redskins Fan’s Lament

Posted from Curmudgeon Corner, Maine

I’m sorry, Mr. Cassell.  Did I violate your personal space?

It made no difference, ultimately, in the outcome of the game, but that alleged “roughing the passer” call on Haynesworth is just further evidence that the effort by the NFL to protect a single group of players is completely out of control.  The NFL has made the determination that an all out effort to keep Quarterbacks from being touched has greater value than protecting the integrity of the game. Redskins Play Musical Linebackers on Practice Squad

The Redskins signed former Detroit Lion and Kansas City Chief linebacker Johnny Baldwin to the practice squad.

Baldwin, who played college at Alabama A&M, replaces linebacker Curtis Gatewood, who was released from the practice squad yesterday.

Baldwin entered the league in 2007 as a fifth-round selection of the Detroit Lions.

Gatewood was originally signed by the Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt following this year’s draft.
