So Long Mike

Free Agency can be exciting, and it can be hectic, but it isn’t all peaces and cream. The Redskins announced today that they have released their longest tenured player – Big Mike Sellers.

The NFL is a brutal business.

A veteran of 12 NFL seasons, Sellers has been with the Redskins since 2004 in his second stint with the team, but he was also with Washington from 1998-2000. The 36-year old fullback has obviously seen his on-field contributions wane over the last couple of seasons, but seemed to focus that unused energy into being a team leader, and even into moulding his replacement in youngster Darrel Young. It says a lot about a guy when he’s willing to mentor the man that is taking his job. Read the rest of this entry »

Beltway Battle Preview: Ravens

The Washington Redskins will square off against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night at FedEx Field. The third preseason game is often a very telling tale of what fans can expect to see in Week 1 of the regular season, but will that be true in 2011? With a lockout shortened offseason, NFL teams may very well need that fourth preseason game as well to get ready. Normally, that game is reserved for determining depth positions and/or special teams, but expect to see evaluation throughout the lineup this year. So what should you look for tomorrow night? Colts Preseason: Make or Break Time

When the Redskins line up against the Indianapolis Colts tonight at Lucas Oil Stadium, there will be a few guys that not only want to make an impression, but need to make an impression. With just a few short weeks left before the regular season, coaches are going to have their fingers on the eject button, and will start jettisoning players after every game. So who is on the bubble, and needs to play well to land on the Redskins 53 man roster? Read the rest of this entry »

Well Redskins Nation, as you scour the newlines today, in search of that tidbit of Redskin knowledge that you didn’t have yesterday, you’re sure to come across the new depth chart released yesterday.

Life in Curmudgeon Corner…

HOOOOO HOOOOOO!  Football is back!

It’s about time:

Mike Sellers has been named a Captain of the Special Teams, which is certainly well deserved. This could prove very interesting, as he is known to be the king of the pranksters at Redskins Park… There will be no restraining him now.  Powerful, emotional leader….  bring it, Mike!   Just PLEASE make sure Tanner Cooley’s got his camera running once in a while for your “team building” exercises… Read the rest of this entry »

The Redskins have signed Zac Atterberry to compete with current punter Ryan Plackemeier this offseason.

The team also signed it’s second fullback of the offseason to compete for a reserve role behind Pro Bowler Mike Sellers, who was the only active fullback on the roster in 2008.

Fullback Jonathan Evans joins the team as an unrestricted free agent. His last NFL stop was with the Buffalo Bills.

The team also signed offensive lineman Isaiah Ross after his practice squad contract with the team expired.

Those whose practice squad contracts have expired (who have not yet been re-signed) are as follows: WR Horace Gant, LB Brandon Archer, LB Johnny Baldwin (who finished the 2008 season on injured reserve), CB Byron Westbrook, and FB Nehemiah Broughton.
