Redskins Offseason: Next Up, Senior Bowl

Chicken Wing and a Prayer

In the afterglow of what was a fantastic season, albeit one that didn’t have the finish any of us wanted comes perhaps the most important offseason for the Redskins that Dan Snyder and the front office has faced in many years.  Obviously there is genuine concern for the status of RGIII but that once scoffed at insurance policy named Kirk Cousins has shown that he can step in and lead this team should Griffin miss time in 2013. The Rise and Fall of the Senior Bowl

It’s amazing that one game, an all-star game at that, can have an impact on a young college football player’s draft stock. Four years of playing with your peers is obviously nowhere near as telling as one week with all-stars – in a vanilla play environment – with vanilla rules – with vanilla preparations. Removing my tongue from my cheek, here are some guys that really helped themselves last week in Mobile:

Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
His only knock is that he isn’t consistently great; but he was great all week at practice, had a sack and three tackles, to post a near-great game as well. He won’t have to wait long to hear his name called at the 2012 NFL Draft, and his impressive Senior Bowl week could prove to make that wait even shorter. Read the rest of this entry »

Redskins News and Notes

Fletcher to Pro Bowl

London Fletcher tweeted yesterday that he had been added to the Pro Bowl list. Does that mean that we stop bitching about how crappy the Pro Bowl and it’s selection process is?

No way that Fletcher should have to be ‘added’ – he should have been there in the first place. He led the league in tackles (166) for crying out loud. Sure it’s great to see ‘ a wrong righted,’ but it doesn’t change the farcical nature of that NFL game in Hawaii. I digress, it doesn’t take away from the accolade and the accomplishment of a 36-year old man performing well enough to be ‘added’ to the Pro Bowl roster again in 2012. Congratulations London.

Fletcher is a free agent this offseason. Retaining the 36-year old linebacker, is arguably the team’s biggest offseason need. You won’t likely ever hear that sentence again in your life. The man defies explanation, and hopefully will continue to do so for the Washington Redskins in 2012.

Redskins Coaches at the Senior Bowl

It was announced this week that the Washington Redskins coaching staff will man the sidelines for this year’s Senior Bowl. While the braintrust didn’t even think the game was important enough to attend this year, I guess this year they will have to act like it’s suddenly a very valuable tool in the entire ‘scouting process.’ To be honest, I think far too much is made of what some of these players do AFTER they’ve ever played their ‘regular football.’ All-star games like the Senior Bowl, coupled with the Scouting Combine have made what players do in the month or two following what has sometimes been a four-year college career, far too weighted on draft day sometimes.

Regardless, it will be a fantastic opportunity for Mike Shanahan to get a look at a couple of pretty good quarterbacks in Ryan Tannehill and Nick Foles. With Matt Barkley and Landry Jones both announcing their intentions to sty in school, the vast quarterback pool has shrunk considerably, and it’s reasonable to expect that the Redskins will have been looking intently at any and all of the top quarterback prospects in the country.
