Week 13: Cowboys

While Steve Spurrier didn't really call enough running plays for the running game to establish itself, the offense didn't execute the plays very well either. Well at least not in the second half. The offensive line did create some good lanes for Big Country to run through early on, but those lanes got smaller and smaller as the game wore on. Stephen Davis finished with 20 carries for 51 yards, an average of only 2.6 yards per carry. Danny Wuerffel had a 17 yard scramble that turned out to be Washington's longest run of the day.
Danny Wuerffel stumbled in his second start. After looking great last week against the Rams, Wuerffel lokked quite ordinary against the Cowboys. While he made some good throws and managed to throw three touchdown passes, he also threw three interceptions. One of the interceptions was tipped by Kenny Watson near the Redskins goal line and bounced right into the hands of Cowboys rookie Roy Williams who ran it back for a touchdown. Wueffel finished 23 of 36 for 243 yards. Derrius Thompson led all Skins' receivers with 6 catches for 94 yards including an 11 yard touchdown reception.
The defense had it's toughest outing since early in the season, partly due to injuries. Jeremiah Trotter (knee) and Dan Wilkinson (calf) both suffered possible season ending injuries and Jessie Armstead and David Terrell also suffered injuries that limited ttheir every down roles. Though the defense did not play poorly and still gave the team a good chance to win the game, their inability to stop Emmitt Smith (23 carries for 144 yards) in the second half had a demoralizing effect. The Cowboys finished with 211 yards and won the time of possession battle by almost six minutes.
The Redskins special teams woes continued against the Cowboys. James Tuthill kicked another field goal attempt into the opposition's arms. To make matters worse, in the skirmish after the blocked field goal, holder and punter Bryan Barker suffered a broken nose and had to leave the game. Tuthill also missed another point after attempt and did not fare very well punting in place of Barker. Champ Bailey had another good punt return (38 yards) and Kevin Mitchell blocked a Dallas punt in the only special team highlights.
