Category: Washington Redskins News
|Number: 36 |
School: The Citadel
Major: Business Administration / Sports Management
Hometown: North Charleston, S.C.
How Acquired: Broughton was selected by the Redskins in the seventh round (222nd overall) of the 2005 draft.
Collegiate Career: Broughton played in 40 games with 29 starts at The Citadel. He recorded 581 carries for 2,638 yards, 25 rushing touchdowns and 47 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns during his college career. During his senior campaign, Broughton was named All-American first-team by The NFL Draft Report, as well as being named All-Southern Conference first-team.
Broughton actually tore his ACL (left knee) as a junior in high school. However, he didn't have surgery and the ligament would tear again in 2003. Broughton made a rapid recovery from his 2003 knee reconstruction surgery. Following his return, he became a "move the chains" type back that simply wore down defenses.
On campus, Broughton was given the nickname "Nemo-sapien" by local media for his unbelievable combination of power and speed. He benched 410 pounds, had a 670-pound squat and a 340-pound power clean. At the combine, he ran a 4.61 40-yard dash, had a 30-inch vertical jump and benched 225 pounds 25 times.
High School Career: Broughton attended North Charleston High School. As a senior he was an All-State and All-Low County selection, rushing for 1,670 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Outlook: Broughton is a bruising inside runner with excellent strength and decent speed. He will come into camp to prove he can bang with the big boys inside and move the chains when called upon. He needs to impress the coaches with good effort, good study habits and good old fashion hard work. If he can remain healthy, Broughton has a good chance of making a club in dire need of a short yardage threat. Broughton will also compete for time in a special teams role.
