Newcomer Howard

How Acquired: Charles Howard was invited to the rookie mini-camp held by the Washington Redskins following the 2005 NFL Draft. The Redskins were impressed by Howard’s performance and signed the undrafted free agent on May 2, 2005.

Collegiate Career: During his collegiate career, Howard saw time at both defensive tackle and defensive end. Charles appeared in 10 games and recorded 17 tackles as a freshman in 2000, including an individual game-high with 5 tackles against North Carolina. During his sophomore season in 2001, he recorded 24 tackles, 2 sacks, and 5 quarterback hurries while appearing in nine games

After redshirting 2002 due to a season-ending knee injury, he bounced back in 2003, playing in all 13 games and totaling 24 tackles, 4 sacks, and 7 quarterback hurries. During his senior season, Charles tallied 17 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 passes defended, 9 quarterback hurries, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovered.

High School Career: Charles attended Union County High School and started all four seasons. He suffered a broken fibula during his senior season, which limited him to just five games. He was still able to record 30 tackles and 7 sacks in those five games. Howard had a monstrous junior season, recording 100 tackles and 17 sacks. Howard chose Florida State after being recruited by Virginia Tech, Florida, Alabama, and Maryland.

Outlook: Howard has the potential to make the team and could surprise many people come training camp and preseason. With linemen such as Demetric Evans and Ron Warner coming out of nowhere in 2004, Howard's ability to play anywhere along the defensive line could allow him to have the same impact in 2005. Howard hopes to utilize that versatility and his quickness to find a place in Gregg Williams’ scheme.
