Wide receiver Santana Moss was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 4 after his three-touchdown performance against Jacksonville. Moss has been honored in this fashion twice before (for his performances against the Cowboys and Giants last season). Moss is ranked third in the NFL in average yards per catch at 19.2.
Running back Clinton Portis is tied for the NFL lead in rushing touchdowns despite missing one game and being limited to 10 carries in another. Portis was the first back to gain more than 100 yards against the Jaguars defense in 13 games. Jacksonville had been holding teams to an average of less than 60 rushing yards per game in 2006.
The Redskin defense held Jacksonville to 33 yards rushing, their lowest output since 1996, and the Jaguars converted only two of 13 third down attempts.
Last year’s 36-0 loss to the Giants was the first time a Gibbs lead team had been shut out in 128 consecutive games.
* Roster Moves
The Redskins signed Lorenzo Alexander, a defensive tackle out of the University of California, and C.J. Brooks, an offensive lineman from the University of Maryland. Both linemen are rookies and will fill holes on the practice squad. The holes were created this week when DT Vaka Manupuna was placed on IR (practice squad) list, and G Ikechuku Ndukwe was signed to the Ravens active roster.
* Injury Updates
Cornerback Shawn Springs is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game at New York; he did not practice on Wednesday so it is unlikely he’ll play. Defensive tackle Joe Salave’a is listed as probable again this week (he was listed as probable last week but did not play) and has returned to practice. Fellow DT Cornelius Griffin, who is recovering from a hip injury, is also listed as probable.
* Odds and Ins
T.J. Duckett, acquired in August as insurance for the running game, may spend his third straight week on the inactive list. This is due to a number of factors:
1. The performance of the backs ahead of him (Portis and Betts).
2. The fact that he still learning to play special teams.
3. Joe Gibbs feels he needs to have an extra tight end on the active roster as opposed to an extra running back.
