The Redskins gave the former Maryland Terrapin his first shot at the NFL in 2005. He had two game winning kicks in his rookie season, with an extra point and field goal that both sealed victories. The extra point came after Santana Moss’ second touchdown catch against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football during Week 2. His game winning field goal came against the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 3, after Seattle kicker Josh Brown missed his opportunity for a game winner just minutes before.
Novak will handle both kickoff and field goal duties.
The Redskins also tried out Todd Peterson, who has played for the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons, as well as former Redskins Jose Cortez and Tyler Jones. Cortez kicked for the Redskins in 2002, and Jones competed with John Hall at training camp this year.
News and Notes
- In what came as a surprise to many, a punter was also in attendance at Redskins Park on Tuesday working out with the kickers. Sean Landeta, a 21-year veteran who last played in the NFL in 2005, worked out for team officials but was not signed.
According to Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, Frost was kicked in the calf, and Landeta was brought in to be assessed as potential insurance in case the injury affects Frost enough to keep him out of this week’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Frost is currently listed as probable on the injury report.
- Offensive Lineman C.J. Brooks was released from the practice squad less than a week after being signed. Brooks, who played at the University of Maryland, also had previous stints with the Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins.
To replace Brooks, the Redskins signed offensive lineman Nick Steitz, formerly of the New England Patriots. Steitz, who twice earned All-Pac 10 honors at the University of Oregon, was originally signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He will wear No. 68.
