Team Needs: Philadelphia Eagles
2007 Results: 8-8
2008 Projected Cap Status: $14,758,000 under the cap
2007 Season Recap:
The Philadelphia Eagles suffered through a rocky 2007 season, barely missing the playoffs with an 8-8 record. They hold the 19th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Donovan McNabb's 10th NFL season was another solid one; the veteran quarterback threw for over 3,300 yards despite missing two games with an injury. Brian Westbrook led the league in total yards, amassing 2,104 yards rushing and receiving. Despite moving the ball with relative ease, the Eagles struggled to score. The offense scored 36 touchdowns but eight of those came in one game against the woeful Detroit Lions. The offensive line struggled with protection, allowing 49 sacks, fifth worst in the league.
Jim Johnson's defense was solid once again, finishing 10th in total yardage allowed and eighth in points surrendered. The rushing defense was particularly strong, only six teams allowed fewer yards on the ground. The Eagles pass defense was average, finishing 15th in yards allowed. But the normally opportunistic defense struggled to generate turnovers, only one team had fewer interceptions and the team only recovered four fumbles. The addition of all-pro Asante Samuel should go a long way toward addressing the lack of interceptions.
1. Safety - Veteran standout Brian Dawkins is entering his 13th season and missed six games last year due to injury. Quintin Mikell is solid but the Eagles defense requires athletic, dynamic playmakers, the team needs to add youth and depth at this spot.
2. Defensive end - The team could use another rusher to pair with Trent Cole, coming off a season where he posted 12.5 sacks and notched 70 tackles. The Eagles signed four-year veteran Chris Clemons but could use another young edge rushing specialist.
3. Offensive line - Tackles Jon Runyan and William Thomas will be 35 and 34 respectively next season and the team struggled against the rush last season.
