From Starter To Waiver Wire Tuesday, the Washington Redskins’ Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato announced the release of former starting Safety, 25-year-old Ifeanyi Ohalete. Ohalete spent the majority of training camp on the third string after a perceived disagreement between Ohalete and position coach Steve Jackson over technique. The 6’2”, 222-pounder probably won’t clear waivers as the Detroit Lions reportedly put in a claim on him.

Ohalete was a graduate of Los Alamitos High School in Los Alamitos, CA. The father of Ifeanyi, Junior, posted 160 tackles, 27 deflections, 1 blocked punt, three fumble recoveries and 6 interceptions while majoring in Business Administration at the University of Southern California.

Ohalete came to the Redskins as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2001. He posted a career year in 2003, starting 15 games at Strong Safety. During that time, Ohalete was third on the team in tackles with 105 and second on the team in interceptions with 3. He was also sixth on the team in special teams stops with 12. Ohalete added 2 forced fumbles, as well.

For his 4-year-career, Ohalete has played in 47 games, all with the Redskins. Of those 47 games, he starting 25 of them. He has posted 183 tackles (118 solo), and 1 sack, including a career high 13-tackle game against the Cowboys on December 4, 2003. Ohalete also has 7 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries.
