Redskins Host McQuarters, Release Safety HallFormer Chicago Bears defensive back R.W. McQuarters paid a visit to Redskins Park on Thursday to take a physical and work out for team officials.

The 28-year-old McQuarters - San Francisco’s 1st round draft pick in 1998 - left Ashburn without a contract and plans on visiting other teams before making a decision on where to resume his NFL career.

McQuarters, who was not joined by his agent during his visit, dined with Redskins officials on Wednesday night. McQuarters’ agent Tom Condon is currently in California negotiating a contract for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in last month’s draft.

The Redskins like the versatility that the 7-year veteran brings to the table. McQuarters, a natural cornerback, also doubled as a safety in 2004. Last season, he totaled 67 tackles and 2 interceptions, returning one for a touchdown on Thanksgiving Day against Dallas.

He is also highly used as a kick and punt returner. In 2004, he was second in the league in punt returns including a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans.

The Bears tried to acquire a low-round draft pick for McQuarters but with no takers, the team felt it was best to release him.

Meanwhile, the Redskins released newly acquired safety Cory Hall on Thursday. The Redskins just signed Hall on Tuesday, but the former 3rd round draft pick asked for his release after participating in just one practice.

Hall was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1999 and signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003. Atlanta released Hall earlier this off-season, but reportedly reached an initial agreement with the safety to facilitate his return. Hall apparently had a change of heart, and opted to instead seek a roster spot with another team.

He received some interest from Dallas but they decided against signing him and he contemplated retirement. He was reportedly talked into signing with the Redskins by his agent, Peter Schaffer.

Apparently, Hall is expected to accept an assistant coaching position at Washington State.
