Taylor finds trouble during off-season boycott

Instead of participating in voluntary workouts and team practices this spring, Redskins safety Sean Taylor has been spending his off-season in his native Miami, Florida much to the chagrin of his teammates and head coach Joe Gibbs.

The former Miami Hurricane has expressed his desire for a new contract but fellow teammate and friend Clinton Portis has stated that Taylor just wants time away from football after a rookie season plagued with off-the-field issues.

Taylor’s time away from Redskins Park has proved costly, as he turned himself in to Miami-Dade County Police Department Saturday night after being charged with aggravated assault and simple battery.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning at about 1:00 A.M. Reportedly, Taylor pointed a gun at a person over a dispute involving two all-terrain vehicles which he claimed were stolen. After leaving the scene Taylor returned about 10 minutes later and became involved in an altercation in which Taylor punched one person.

Taylor was released on $16,500 bond on Sunday. An arraignment date will be set later. The Redskins announced Monday that Taylor will be excused from the upcoming mini-camp to try and sort out his affairs.

Taylor was selected 5th overall by the Redskins in the 2004 NFL Draft. He posted 89 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one sack during his first NFL season.
