Sixth-Round Pick Newberry Agrees To TermsFormer Stanford linebacker Jared Newberry became the first of Washington’s six selections in the draft to agree to terms.

Newberry, a former walk-on, played outside linebacker for most of his career at Stanford but also spent time as a fullback and safety.

He finished his career at Stanford with 156 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 14 passes defended.

After the draft, Coach Joe Gibbs expressed high praise regarding Newberry’s intelligence as a football player. Gibbs moved Newberry from outside linebacker to middle linebacker and feels very confident that he can handle the switch.

Newberry, selected 183rd overall, is competing as a possible replacement for Antonio Pierce, who left the Redskins to sign with the New York Giants after a breakout 2004 season. He will most likely see action in a reserve role and on special teams.

The Redskins also made some moves on the offensive line. The team signed Tam Hopkins and Tyler Lenda. Hopkins entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Redskins in 2001. He had stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings. Lenda joined the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2003. Both played in NFL Europe this spring.

The team also announced the released of offensive lineman Dominique Richardson. Richardson signed with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent out of Howard after attending the team’s rookie camp on a tryout basis.
