Redskin Players of the Game: Eagles
Each week, THN will choose their three players of the game at each position. Here are week nine's selections:
Offense: Mark Brunell
Against the Eagles, Brunell had help from all areas of the offense. Whether it was Clinton Portis’ blocking, Mike Sellers’ powerful running, Santana Moss’ crucial catches that converted for first downs, or Chris Cooley’s career-high 85 receiving yards, Brunell had the weapons around him needed to win. Brunell failed to throw a touchdown pass for his second straight game, but for the fourth time since becoming a starter he did not throw an interception. Brunell continued to display tremendous accuracy with his passes and usually hit receivers on their chest or within an arms’ reach. He also knew to throw the ball away when there wasn’t a play to be made. Brunell completed 21 passes on 29 attempts and threw for 224 yards.
Defense: LaVar Arrington
Arrington, making his first start of the season, was a part of a total team effort on defense. The Redskins held the Eagles to just 45 yards rushing and contained the dangerous Brian Westbrook to 24 yards. LaVar tallied six tackles, tying defensive end Phillip Daniels for the team lead. He was very quick in his pursuit of Westbrook all night and played a key role in stopping the fourth-year back out of Villanova, giving the boisterous FedEx Field crowd plenty to cheer about. Arrington has now surpassed Warrick Holdman in tackles on the season.
Special Teams: Derrick Frost
Frost had another big game, punting 6 times for 260 yards. His 43.3 yard average is his second-highest average on the season. On two consecutive punts in the fourth quarter, Frost pinned the Eagles inside their own 20-yard line. The first of these punts was downed by James Thrash on the five-yard line and led to an Eagles’ three-and-out.
