Jacobs Traded To San FranciscoThe Redskins cut ties on Monday with Taylor Jacobs by sending the fourth year receiver to the San Francisco 49ers for cornerback Mike Rumph.

A former second round selection, Jacobs’ career in Washington began with plenty of promise and ended with minimal results. Jacobs was never able to climb the depth charts and battled many injuries. With the acquisitions of Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd this past offseason, the odds of making the final 53-man roster looked grim for the former Florida Gator.

In three seasons, Jacobs gained only 315 yards on 30 receptions with just one touchdown.

Rumph was drafted by the 49ers in the first round (27th overall) of the 2002 Draft. He was highly touted coming out of the University of Miami. Like Jacobs, Rumph has been hindered by injuries as well. After his breakout season in 2003 in which he made 62 tackles and 3 interceptions, he appeared in just 5 games the last two seasons. Rumph suffered a groin injury and a broken arm in 2004 and tore a muscle in his foot in 2005.

It is expected that Rumph can compete with Kenny Wright, another 2006 acquisition for the Redskins, for the nickel cornerback slot but he can just as easily end up as the fourth cornerback on the roster.

Rumph re-joins former San Francisco teammates Brandon Lloyd and Andre Carter and becomes the sixth former Miami Hurricane on the Redskins roster along with Clinton Portis, Santana Moss, Sean Taylor, Rocky McIntosh and Buck Ortega.

Jacobs missed Sunday’s exhibition opener at Cincinnati with a strained groin and Rumph is coming off a poor performance in which he missed four tackles against the Chicago Bears in San Francisco’s preseason opener.

A change of scenery could be what both players need to revive their young careers.
