Hog Wire: News and NotesClinton Portis to undergo surgery on his left shoulder

Portis injured his right hand in the first quarter of Sunday's 27-3 loss at Philadelphia, and three screws were inserted into his right ring finger on Monday. Tuesday it was reported that he would be placed on injured reserve. The shoulder surgery should take place sometime next week. Portis suffered a partial dislocation of the left shoulder in the opening preseason game at Cincinnati, and having the shoulder surgery now will give him more time to rehabilitate multiple injuries (hand, neck, ankle and shoulder) and be ready for OTAs in 2007. 2006 will be Portis’ least productive season with 127 carries for 523 yards an average of 4.1 yards-per-carry, with seven touchdowns. He also caught 17 passes for 170 yards. With Portis out, Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will carry the load in the running game. Betts is expected to start against the Buccaneers.

Jason Campbell now starting quarterback

Early this week coach Joe Gibbs said "we're going to give Jason his opportunity and see if he can come in and help us be more productive … Hopefully it's something he comes in and takes advantage of. He has spent a year-and-a-half preparing for this." Gibbs called replacing Brunell a "tough decision to make. He went on to say that Brunell will be the backup and Todd Collins will drop to the #3 spot. Gibbs said that both Brunell and Collins were disappointed but handled the news like gentlemen. After the announcement, Campbell said "it's a beginning of a new era for me … I just want to continue to be myself and work hard." Campbell, who is 6-4 and 223 pounds, has been getting increased reps in practice since the bye week due to Brunell’s injuries. Campbell said his extra work after practice in recent weeks with quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor have made him much more ready for this start then he would have been two months ago.

Redskins re-sign Brian Kozlowski

The team announced on Wednesday that 6-3, 265-pound TE Brian Kozlowski would fill the vacant roster spot of RB Clinton Portis. Kozlowski played in 27 games for Redskins from 2004-2005 but was let go before the 2006 season. He should be able to fill in for TE Christian Fauria, who has been slowed by an ankle injury
