PotG: Week 3: New York Giants Offense: Santana Moss
3 receptions, 89 yards, 1 rush, 2 yards

The Redskins were unable to move the ball at all in the second half against the Giants on Sunday, so naming an offensive player of the game is difficult. Santana Moss gets the nod on the basis of his success against the league's worst pass defense in the first half. Quarterback Jason Campbell is starting to look like he loves throwing the deep ball with Moss as his target. The Giants’ secondary seemed unable to stop this combo in the first half. Moss made a spectacular 49-yard grab in the second quarter that led to a Chris Cooley touchdown. Many questioned the Redskins’ offensive play-calling in the second half because of the underutilization of aggressive passing that was so successful in the first half.

Defense: London Fletcher
10 tackles, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery

Although the second half was a different story, the Redskins’ defense was dominant and playing to their standards in the first half, allowing only a field goal during the Giants’ first offensive drive. New York’s second offensive drive, however, only lasted one play, as quarterback Eli Manning was sacked by defensive end Andre Carter and fumbled, allowing Fletcher the chance to scoop the ball up and giving the Redskins’ offense prime field position at the Giant’s six-yard line. Later on in the second quarter, London intercepted Eli Manning’s pass to tight end Jeremy Shockey, giving the Redskins the opportunity to tack on three points to make their halftime lead 17-3.

Special Teams: Rock Cartwright
5 kickoff returns for 140 yards

For the second straight week, Cartwright had a strong performance returning kickoffs, almost breaking one loose for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter when the Redskins needed it most. That run put the Redskins’ starting field position at their own 45-yard line as they were trying to tie up the game after giving up 21 unanswered points. Rock returned the opening kickoff for 37 yards and also returned another key fourth quarter kickoff for 36 yards.
