WILLIAM GREEN

Postby Redskins4Life » Sat Jan 17, 2004 5:04 pm

Last year the Cleveland Browns drafted a young RB named William Green. He struggled the first couple games, but then exploded and finished the season with nearly a 1000 yards. This year, he played prettty well but then got arrested with DUI charges. Cleveland now thinks their back of the future is Lee Suggs, and will most likely release Green or trade him, but he has minimal trade value. Green is a big sturdy back who has great speed and is very strong. If he keeps himself out of trouble, he has potential to be a great back. What do you guys think about trying to pick him up this offseason if we dont draft Kevin Jones or sign a FA runningback?

William Green...
2002-
16 games played, 10 starts. 243/887 (3.7 avg.) 6 scores
2003-
7 games played, 7 starts. 142/559 (3.9 avg.) 1 score.

9 fumbles in 23 games.

DWI.

I don't know, lifer. He'd have to make a pretty good case for himself to displace Betts. What do you like about him the most ? I'd like surer hands.

The fact is he's really raw on and off the field. He is pretty talented but we experimented enough with guys who have been in trouble and failed miserably.

Hes really talented, just really raw. Hes also done some pretty stupid things off the field involving drugs, but other than that, hes fine. The only scenario in which i'd like to pick up Green, is if the Redskins dont draft a RB in the first or second round of the draft. All of the good FA backs this year are too old, and would only be a temporary solution at RB. If Green can stay away from trouble, he could be a long term solution at RB, and we could probably get him pretty cheap. Don't forget, this guy was a first round draft pick in 2002

But the chances of Green staying out of trouble is very slim. That's why I wouldn't pick him up. I think Staley and Dunn are very great options for us.

I agree with Evil. We don't need Staley or Dunn and Green fumbles to much. Gibbs dosn't like turnovers, who does, Betts could be the man or maybe somebody like Greg Jones from Florida St. with the 2nd pick.

You guys are saying that William Green fumbles too much? Well, do you know a man whose in Green Bay right now by the name of Ahman Green. Ahman had outstanding talent, but had fumblitis in Seattle, so he got traded to Green Bay. Look at how well Ahman is doing right now. Who knows, maybe people with the last name of Green have difficulty holding on to the ball, but Ahman has showed that it can be cured. I say give Will Green a shot, if he keeps himself out of trouble, we might of found ourselves our RB for the next 5-10 years... and get him pretty damn cheap in the process.

Vinny had to eat some crow as the season infolded after he traded for Trung in March. I think him, Gibbs, and Snyder are going to be VERY, VERY cautious when it comes to trading for another startign running back. I wouldnt take a chance with Green like we did with Trung.

OK, I'm totally biased b/c I went to Boston College and was there while Willie Green was there but I don't think he's quite the discipline case you all are assuming him to be and I do think he's a great back. Do I think he's quite right for Gibbs? I'm definitely not certain of that. Do I think that Gibbs could keep him out of trouble and maximize his potential? Yes, I do. However, in my opinion, he's more of a speed back, not a Stephen Davis (Super Bowl-bound) style back.

Negative ! What Gibbs said was he wanted people of good character, of which Mr. William Green has none.
Character can be most easily defined as "What you do when you're sure nobody will find out", imho.
Additionally, my good friend lifer is forgetting that at least one "Green" that we all know and love actually did a pretty danged good job of holding on to the ball, and his name ain't "Trent", either !

Although Ahman doesnt cough the ball up as much as he did in Seattle he still has a tendency to fumble. I know that I am getting away from the topic but one more time...KEVIN JONES!

I'd personally rather get Kevin Jones, but if we need to adress different needs in the draft to take KJ, then I say take a shot at William Green. Hes most likely gonna get released, so we wont need to give up anything in exchange. And like psummers said, Joe Gibbs will bring out the best of him, and he is a great back. If we can get him cheap, I say go for it.

There have got to be better backup RBs than Green and ones that are available and looking for a team like Gibbs' will be putting together...
