Titans to part with Vince Young after 5 years

Titans owner Bud Adams announced Wednesday that the team will move forward without Vince Young on the roster.
Adams has picked coach Jeff Fisher over Young, which was not only advised by numerous Titans officials but will save the owner a pretty penny. The Titans will reportedly "either release or trade" Young this offseason. Young was due $12.75 million in 2011, and his lack of leadership skills made him unworthy of the investment, regardless of on-field performance. The Titans will go back to the drawing board at quarterback. Kerry Collins is a free agent. Jan. 5 - 6:53 pm et

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --
Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams says it's time to let Vince Young go and find his franchise's next new quarterback.

The Titans released a statement Wednesday night in which Adams said Young won't be on the team's roster next season, but he's still evaluating the coaching staff, including head coach Jeff Fisher. Adams says he wishes things had worked out better, but he thinks it's best for the franchise to move on without Young.

General manager Mike Reinfeldt informed agent Tom Condon that Young isn't in the team's plans for the future. But league rules keep Young from being released until Feb. 7, and he cannot be traded until the first day of the league year. Reinfeldt says Young is welcome to rehab his season-ending thumb injury at the team facility.

Young, the No. 3 overall pick in 2006, has had several run-ins with Fisher during his tenure in Nashville. Most recently, Fisher and Young clashed in the team locker room on Nov. 21, following the Titans' 19-16 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins. Young, who was injured in the game and eventually placed on injured reserve, walked out of the room during Fisher's postgame speech and two days later Fisher said Young was not welcome at the team facility.

It was expected the team would not bring both Young and Fisher back for next season.

Fisher said talks with the team were ongoing during his weekly radio show Tuesday night. His job status has been in question since the Titans lost eight of their final nine games for a 6-10 record, but the NFL's uncertain labor situation could keep him around.

"We didn't anticipate coming to any decisions or conclusions or solutions, if you will, today," Fisher said at the start of his show. "Talks have been ongoing. As I said yesterday, it's a process. It's a complicated process, and there's a lot of moving parts. We're all trusting that collectively we'll arrive at the best decision."

Fisher is under contract for 2011 at an estimated $6.5 million. Young is due a $4.25 million roster bonus on the 10th day of the new league year, whenever that starts. His salary for 2011 is $8.5 million.

Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Some have suggested AH for VY straight up. Why would you want to trade bad for bad??? Makes no sense. Titans are trying to clean things up. Why bring in trouble. Let the guy go somewhere else and sort his stuff out. Just not here.

Matt Bowen, nationalfootballpost.com

I wrote about V.Y. a while back. Talked to coaches and scouts. And they all told me the same thing: he doesn’t work. Used words such as "lazy." And that applies to his footwork, his ability to read coverages and so on. You can’t have that in your quarterback—because it isn’t conducive to winning and the overall team aspect. There is no leadership involved in any of that and the rest of the roster can see right through it. And Bud Adams and the Titans had seen enough.

The NFL is not college football. Every professional can play.
