Niners lock up Barlow with extension, tag LB Peterson

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Redskin relevance.

While their quarterback situation remains in flux, the San Francisco 49ers have made it clear who their featured running back will be this year.

SportsLine.com has learned that the Niners have signed running back Kevan Barlow to a five-year extension that includes $8 million to sign. The contract is laced with guaranteed money and bonuses, but one source said it could reach about $20 million over the course of the next five years.

The team is expected to announce the deal later Monday.

In just four starts this past year, Barlow showed hes a featured back by rushing for 1,024 yards and a whopping 5.1 yard average. He also hauled in 35 passes for 307 yards in 2003, his third season in the NFL.

His re-signing will likely also spell the end for Garrison Hearst as the team's featured back. Hearst may decide to return at a lesser salary or take his services elsewhere.

The team also slapped the dreaded franchise tag on LB Julian Peterson.
