The skins should change the primary defense to a 3-4.

Why? Well first off the best defenses in the league use the 3-4. New England and Pittsburg both run the 3-4 with much success.

It is also much easier to draft for the 3-4. In a 4-3 the classic defensive end is about 6-4 290lbs typically. Very hard to find a defensive end who can stop the run consistently and rush the passer.

In the 3-4 you have two outside linebackers/defensive ends. Linebackers are in abundance. Demarcus Ware is a fine example of the ideal choice as a outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Lawrence Taylor being the ultimate 3-4 linebacker/defensive end. Also you can put more pressure on the QB with the 3-4.

Teams that run the 3-4 are also among the league leaders in almost every important defensive stat. Sacks, interceptions , and turnovers.

I know the Skins could run it maybe next year. We would have to draft another outside linebacker opposite side of Washington.

Our line up would look like this.

NT Griffin
DT/DE Gholston
DT/DE Montgomery

ILB FLetcher
ILB Mcintosh/ BLades
OLB Marcus Washington
OLB ?? Draft pick/ Andre Carter

CB Smoot/ROgers
CB SHawn Springs

FS Doughty/ ?? Draft pick
SS Laron Landry

I think we have good stout D tackles already. We would probably have to draft another outside linebacker in the mold of Demarcus Ware.

I have to disagree with you on this one. 3-4 Defenses are ran by some of the better defenses in the league but those defenses aren't great because of the scheme. There are 3-4 defenses that are crappy! And some teams have moved away from the 3-4 defense and improved, i.e. the Ravens move to the 46.

In addition you are asking three people to play out of position. McIntosh hasn't been an ILB, Griffin isn't a Nose tackle, and Carter doesn't play OLB nearly as well as DE.

You need only to look at San Fran to know that this isn't as simple as you make it sound. They run a 3-4 but they suck. They tried using Carter as an OLB and he sucked at it. Why repeat that error? Especially when the defense is playing well as it is constructed?

Certainly there are teams in the league who stink at running the 3-4. Just like any scheme you need the athletes to make it work.

Yes Carter has not been great at OLB. I would rather have the front office draft a couple more OLBs/DE type players. Blades could probably play the other ILB spot. So yes ILb, FS, OLB, DT need some additions before running a 3-4. Its just I would prefer if the Redskins ran a 3-4, I am well aware that a couple players are needed to do this. The draft is what I am thinking.

Well this defense is 16th in the league is sacks and 23rd in interceptions. This defense however is eighth in total yards against. Also 4th in rushing defense.

So still very stout against the run but sacks, interceptions and overall turnovers are still not that great.

Maybe they're getting better?

The defense has a couple of young kids on the DL. Another couple of kids among the LB's.

And who thought Leigh Torrence would play some DB? Who had heard of Leigh Torrence back in August? Or Reed Doughty, who was "that other new guy".

And, of course, we know who was leading the league in interceptions.

Maybe with another year of learning, some stability, and who knows?

I do believe that switching from 4-3 to 3-4 would upend the defense they have, which is pretty good.

I see how changing the defense would affect the current progress.

Since we do have a new coach coming, I am hoping for the Giants defensive coordinator. He knows how to get good defensive lineman. He is also very good at running the 4-3. In my heart I will always prefer a 3-4 but the 4-3 can be very effective if we have a solid defensive line.

The strength of the 3-4 vs the 4-3 is you don't know who's coming at your QB. You have 3 perma-push (NT and DEx2) and then you have a LB somewhere (or 2). If you have truly versatile LBs, you can make this work IMO. We don't have the OLB to make this work at this time. It was mentioned that Carter wasn't good at OLB. While I like Carter as a pass rush specialist, I still don't see him as an everydown DE, so I don't think he would excel in this system. I see Carter having to go ultimately if we run a 3-4.

Griffin is hurt to much to rebuild a defense around as a NT. I would cut (rotate him if we have to) and pick up a good NOSE TACKLE. For a NT, I think of Dave Butz. Tough and Mean.

Golsten/Montgomery would have to prove themselves as they haven't become NFL starting level just yet, but they still have a good chance to. First round goes to D-Line IMO. The rest we have a pretty good core, maybe another OLB if Godfrey can't handle it until next year.

Also would have to see how Rocky reacts to ILB, b/c I don't see him as a 3-4 OLB.

We have talent that would not work (in my meager opinion) in a 3-4 and if we could trade for quality fillers of the deficiencies that the 3-4 conversion would create, then I would be open to it. That's a lot more trouble than I think the 'skins need right now, though.
