To a vast majority of fans, the offensive line lies at the root of the problem for this offense. Say what you will about an underaggressve Jason Campbell and his effect on this offense. Without the time to throw, any Qb is going to be afforded fewer seconds in the pocket, fewer chances of letting deep plays emerge, and less confidence in his overall purpose at the helm. With that being said, what are the chances that Levi Jones gets the start and our chances are greatly improved?
The point I'm making is not just about Levi stepping in for Heyer, its that Heyer is not a part of the blocking scheme. He's been nothing more than disappointing this season and is grading out as undrafted linemen usually do. At either tackle position Heyer is unable to run block and isn't able to stop the bull rush consistently even with a TE in. Not that Levi Jones is going to remedy this situation. But he may just be part of the spark this team needs.
This line would look something like this-
Levi Jones @LT
Dockery @ LG
Rabach@C
Someone@RG
Mike Williams @ RT
It's hard to predict who the RG would be, maybe Batiste, but this combination isn't the worst situation we've been in the past two seasons. Surely, there will be miscommunication and cohesion issues that will lead to sacks with the possibility of turnovers. Nothing new, right? The difference is that Levi Jones is at the very least capable of pass blocking if not better and Mike Williams hasn't been a disaster and might afford Campbell a handful of plays where he beats his man. Can you tell me how often Campbell has taken a 7 step drop since Samuels went down? This would afford us the strongest combination of bookends other than the two plays in which Samuels was in with MWilliams.
Our team has become a joke of a run team and a disaster of a passing offense and for me personally, Stephon Heyer is more than just partly to blame. Were we to feel as though he wasn't responsible for our inability to run right? IN THE NFL for crying out loud? Last week, we saw Mike Williams dumptruck someone in the run game. Hit of the Game and it wasn't close. This Sunday, the Redskins can field a running attack that doesn't resemble a NASCAR Race and may possibly be more difficult to stop. They also have a chance to get some 7sec pockets. I'm talking Romo Pockets. Not every time, but more often than at any point in the season with Heyer in. The only thing consistent about Heyer is how often his spot is to blame for the pressure. For me, we were ready to roll with Samuels at LT and BMW at RT, and just two plays later Samuels was done as a Redskin. Here's to hoping for just a handful of good pockets on Sunday.

I mean this is really a sad state of affairs if you think our best option to start is a man who two other losing teams did not want on their squad.
Isn't Jon runyan still a free agent and hes 35 so he fits in to the free agents we like to pick up to play on our team why havent we gone out and tried to pick him up he still beat up on us last year and would be a proven better option than heyer at least. |

| I don't just think so, I'm darn sure of this combination. Heyer ends up being pushed into the middle of the pocket every time, he just doesn't have the strength. I don't know how often people try to turn the corner on Heyer but to me it seems as though they know the quickest way to the QB is a straight line that involves picking up Stephon and taking him there too. To me, it's all about the pass protection. Campbell can't be effective and our young wideouts NEVER get the ball thrown to them, how are they supposed to compete with Desean Jackson and Eddie Royal by averaging 1-2 chances a game? Jackson must get 10 shots a game trying to get the ball in his hands. Malcom Kelly could be clutch, we won't ever know until Campbell can take a 5 step drop and Kelly's route has time to unfold. It just feels like an injustice to everyone on offense to have to be weighed down by a line that needed to be fixed four years ago. |
