NOTE OF THE NIGHT
Red light District –The Capitals have four players with 15 or more goals this season; no other team has more than two, and seven teams don’t have any players with as many as 15 goals. Washington is also the only team in the NHL with eight players in double-digits in goals.
FIVE MORE NOTES NO MEDIA PERSON SHOULD BE WITHOUT
The big 4-0 –Washington fired 43 shots on goal Tuesday night against Montreal, the eighth time this season the Capitals have had 40-plus shots. Five of those instances have come in the last 15 games, since the start of December. Washington is 7-0-1 when it has at least 40 shots on net.
In a Flash –Tomas Fleischmann, playing center for the first time as a Capital, had a season-high three points Tuesday night (1g-2a). He scored the first goal of the year and improved upon his NHL leading shooting percentage (24.2%). Fleischmann has 15 goals despite missing the first 11 games of the season and is just four goals shy of his career high, set last season.
Green, going –Mike Green leads all NHL defensemen with 40 points and is tied for the lead with 10 goals. Green has seven goals and 14 points in his last 14 games, with goals in four of the last six games and points in six out of seven.
Making a point –Just 19 players in the NHL have averaged at least a point per game over the last two seasons combined, and four of them are Capitals –Alex Ovechkin (1.42), Alexander Semin (1.19), Nicklas Backstrom (1.0 and Mike Green (1.04, the only defenseman).
3’s a charm –Defenseman Tom Poti has assists in three straight games since returning from injury, one game shy of his best point streak as a Capital (four games from 2/26/08 –3/3/08, 6a). Poti has six points in his last 12 games after recording four points in his first 22.
