Matt Bowen
Did anyone see the hit Matt put on the fullback. He stopped the dude in his tracks. This week on the NFL network, Redskins get the game of the week honors!

He has been a weak link IMHO, with a tendency to arm tackle or play bull fighter like the rest of our defense. So he's been credited with a lot of tackles because no one else is making them and he's the last line of defense. He's made some decent plays on the picks, but dropped some picks as well, and he surely hasn't punished anyone or freightened anyone from going over the middle. He's a backup safety. Haven't we been through this already in another post?
We need a serious upgrade in our safties and hopefully next years draft will provide one that we will elect to choose....rather than another non-productive, unproven receiver.

I dont keep up with post and if did why did you post your opinion. Maybe someday we will get superman to help our defense, cause with no line everything on defense will and is exposed. He is safety, his numbers are consistent with other top safeties in the league. What do you want from this dude. Worry about our line not the safety. First things first. We will get there.
One other thing every safty want be as good as ....... Roy Williams. Just be patient, we will survive.

I have to disagree with you SkinCity. It is absolutely sad that one our leading tacklers is Matt Bowen. With the talent of our LB core Bowen shouldnt be even close to leading the team. He was brought in to provide crushing blows to the opposition and so far he is not a threat over the middle. I would rather see him get burnt once in a while and lay killer hits on whoever dares catch the ball in his area.
I want him to have an impact from the strong safety position and live up to the hype that he came in with. He hasn't done that IMHO, and I expect more from the position and don't consider him anywhere near a top safety in the league....nor do I believe most would.
I agree, we need help on the DL, but an upgrade at both safety spots is long overdue.....and was first on my list before we let Gardner and Bid Dan go.
Agreed....Roy Williams is not your average safety....but I hopeful we can get one near as good....we're not even close right now.
Patience is something I've never been known for...and have long since run out of it with the Skins.

I just looked it up on NFL.com. Bowen has more tackles, more interceptions, and more passes defensed than Roy Williams. I don't think he's the weak link. I think our lack of pass rush and push in the middle are the weak links.
oops....sorry!

TH - I hate to disagree with you in a way... but with the interior of the line being taken care of, Bowen can get his head off of the swivel and quit watching for the run plays and the pass plays at the same time. He is dying because of the scheme and the lack of the pass rush, pure and simple.
If there are two beefy interior linemen, and two ends that pay attention to what kind of play is being run, and three linebackers that play where they are supposed to and not 6 yards off the ball, then Bowen doesn't have to watch SO hard for the run that it keeps him out of position on the pass defense.

that's a whole lotta of if's there....all I'm saying is that I'd like a better safety or two....someone other than Bowen.
Would a better DL make Bowen a better player? Maybe. They would make all the LBs and DBs better, but we don't have that luxury....haven't for some time.

Skin 75 what are you talking about
if he is on defense and is getting Majority of tackles he is doing his Job. If the safety is geeting the most Tackles this be because the line is not pressuring. WTF, Football 101 up in here
I think what some of guys are trying to say is you are looking for a Safety with a loud demeanor, not one who does there job and not get recognized by the fans.
I also notice Matt on running plays seem to be deep and not in position to harnass the run

Man maybe I am just a pessamist, but I feel there are a few people REALLY searching for something good to say about our defense. Matt Bowen is NOT doing the job he was brought in to do. I'm not saying it is entirely his fault. But the man is not even close to one of the best safties in the league. I laugh at the comparison to Roy Williams who as a second year player is the leader of the Dallas defense. BTW: SkinCity my point was that if MB is one of the leaders in tackles it is a SAD stat. That means our line is getting no push and LB's are getting blocked. Bottom line is Bowen was supposedly a hard-hitting blood thirsty safety that made anyone who even came in his area pay for it. That has not been what I have seen so far this year. Am I wrong? The few times he really has laid a lick on someone have been on the practice field.
