This per Rich Randler: Youth movement is in Force...

Quote:
There are four specialists on the roster, the Redskins will keep three.

In: P Sav Rocca, LS Nick Sundberg, PK Graham Gano
Out: PK Neil Rackers

Breakdown

Rocca and Sundberg have no competition right now although they could bring in someone during camp should either one of them falter. That seems unlikely and they are very likely to go into the season with their jobs.

If Rackers clearly outperforms Gano in camp and in the preseason games, the job is his. If Gano is better, he gets the job. That’s obvious. But who will win if there is no clear winner?

Will Danny Smith and Mike Shanahan go with the veteran Rackers, believing that his experience will be an asset the team can lead on as the season wears on? Or will they stick with younger Gano thinking that they have gone through the labor pains for the past two years to they should get the baby?

I think that on this youth-oriented team the younger player will get the push. So since Gano wins out in two of the three possible scenarios I’ll go with picking Gano as the winner of the competition.

Hard to disagree that if it's a wash in camp, Gano should be the one to stay. Rackers is old and declining; Gano is young and still a question mark.

There will be competition for the Redskins' FG kicking duties

Gano is not getting the job unless he earns it

I hope he does b/c he's got a canon of a leg. Just needs accuracy and height on his kicks. But that comes with confidence and experience.

Precisely how I feel about Gano. Think (hope) he could be a long term answer at the position, one less thing to be worried about.

I know what you're saying, man. It kills me too, because he definitely cost us a couple games last season. I'd just like to see the team rewarded for having some patience with a young kicker. Take his lumps, learn from mistakes and grow into a reliable player at the position.

I'm totally hoping Gano gets the job — assuming he earns it, of course. I see a lot of upside in him, and think his best kicking days are still ahead.

Yeah, but without that we might've had to trade even MORE for RGIII.

I always thought that, competition nonwithstanding, Gano would come out on top.....and age would be one key factor. Still think that unless Gano just lays the proverbial egg in training camp and pre season games, he will be the man.
