The Best XFL Betting Sites

The XFL is the most extreme – no pun intended – football league outside the NFL. While the ‘x’ stands for Xtreme, we wouldn’t blame you for thinking it stood for ‘Xciting’ or even ‘Xhilarating’ after watching old footage of the highly action-packed football tournament.

Betting Tips for the XFL

While the XFL isn’t scheduled to start anytime soon, it isn’t too early to brush up on your betting strategies so that you know exactly what kinds of bets you can place on the XFL.

The ill-fated 2020 season of the XFL did teach us one valuable thing – that betting options when it comes to XFL betting are quite similar to betting on NFL or college football. Online sportsbooks seemed to largely have the same variety of options on hand, so betting on the XFL will largely be business as usual if you’ve ever bet on the NFL. With that said, here are some things that we think you should expect when XFL betting lines do make their inevitable return.

A Faster Game Means More Volatile Online Sports Betting

There are two key changes to the rules and structure of the XFL, in order to make it a more exciting product. The first is to reduce the duration of XFL games to two hours. This means that the players will be under far more pressure, which will force reckless plays, more injuries, and an overall more attacking game. This also means that things are likely to change at a moment’s notice when you’re betting on XFL games.

The second key change is that XFL allows teams to attempt 1-point, 2-point, and 3-point goal conversions to add to the value of a touchdown. This means that unlike the NFL, teams don’t play with six to seven point conversions, but play for nine points. In practice, this means that a team that is trailing by nine points doesn’t need two touchdowns to salvage the game as is the case in the NFL. In the XFL, they’d only need to score one touchdown and a three-point conversion.

Understanding XFL Betting Odds Will Be a Learning Curve

The basis of XFL betting odds isn’t going to be straightforward to either sports bettors or online sportsbooks even once the XFL starts. With a lack of historic precedent, it is yet to be seen how the XFL teams perform, making it that much harder to calculate XFL odds. An experienced bettor stands to ever so slightly tilt the odds in their favor by extensively researching the coaches and individual players, and take a punt on who seems likely to perform. Just a few things to keep in mind for when you open your XFL betting account.

Some Familiar Betting Options

Betting on the XFL is expected to be fairly simple for those who already know how to bet on the NFL. XFL sportsbooks are likely to offer the same wager options that are available for other football leagues. Expect to see XFL moneyline bets, Over / Under wagers, XFL prop bets, points spread bets, parlay bets, and XFL futures bets to start with, before sports betting odds can be updated to a point that opens up more types of unconventional bets.

Here’s a one-line summary of each type of betting option you can expect to encounter, just to jog your memory.

XFL moneyline bet

  • A simple bet on the winner / loser of an XFL game.

Over / under wagers

  • Wagers on the total score being over or under a limit.

XFL prop bet

  • Bet on the likelihood of individual player milestones.

Points spread bets

  • Bet on a team winning or losing by a certain margin.

XFL futures

  • Bet on results in the near and distant future and independent of individual matches.

The History of the Xtreme Football League

The XFL has everything that a football tournament needs to be successful in the United States. The game on the pitch is fast-paced, offensive, and has players truly pushing themselves to extremes to score every touchdown. The reason for this is that the rules of the XFL are largely similar to the NFL, but differ in key areas that make certain key moments feel distinctly more high-stakes than anything else.

Another reason why the XFL is so fascinating for both sports fans and sports bettors, is the association of big names with the XFL and the mystique surrounding what they might do next. The XFL’s history is also enough proof of how this historically mismanaged league is poised to become a great comeback story in American football. We all know how much sports fans love a comeback story.

The XFL – just like the USFL – is in arguably the most crucial moment in its history, as it attempts to cement its position as a stable professional American football league that is here to stay on the calendar.

This crucial moment in the XFL’s history fortunately coincides with a historic period in the world of sports betting in the United States. Over half of the United States can now place wagers on sports such as horse racing, college football, NBA, NHL, XFL, and more. It’s a win-win situation for avid football fans and sports bettors alike, to whom the XFL season represents a new opportunity to enjoy the best of both football and football betting.

The timing of its return couldn’t be much better for football fans who like to bet on football games throughout the year. If you’d like to learn more about the XFL to start a new football betting journey, the best place to start would be to learn about the tumultuous history of this league.

Every period in the XFL’s troubled history, is connected a common thread. If you’ve ever watched a WWE match – or have ever been exposed to a meme, for that matter – you surely know of Vince McMahon. The legendary boss of the WWE is no stranger to controversy, and it certainly followed him throughout his time as the founder and owner of the XFL.

The First Xtreme Football League (2001)

You read that right – the original XFL was founded by none other than Vince McMahon in 2001, and those who actually watched the games wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that the sport appeared to be more WWE than football.

The influence of the founder’s wrestling DNA couldn’t have been clearer in the XFL’s inaugural season. XFL matches often veered more into the territory of sports entertainment than the sport itself, with features like sky cams, in-helmet microphones, and in-game interviews with players on the pitch.

In terms of ratings, this was initially great for the new league – but for the shortest period of time. Despite the XFL taking place in the NFL’s off-season, only its initial matches saw incredible surges in ratings – followed by a devastating fall. The fans had made it clear that they didn’t want a football league that had some of the most gimmicky aspects of WWE. The XFL was dead in the water after its first season, which was won by the Los Angeles Xtreme.

That lone XFL season was the only one of its time, since the league was shut down right after the 2001 season with both partners including Vince McMahon losing $35 million each. Perhaps the X stands for ‘Xpensive.’

The Return of the XFL (2017)

Somewhere around mid-2017, Vince McMahon began to publicly tease the idea of bringing back XFL football. This talk got the sports world buzzing about whether McMahon – who still held the trademark to the then defunct XFL – would actually risk burning his fingers twice on starting a new league.

However, this wasn’t the same Vince McMahon who started the original XFL. He had learnt from his mistakes from the inaugural season, and stated that the tournament would undergo so many changes that it would practically be a reimagining of the XFL as opposed to a relaunch.

McMahon was determined to give it everything. By everything, we literally mean $500 million – the amount which he was willing to invest. He showed every intention of staying true to his word, liquidating over $100 million in WWE stock to fund Alpha Entertainment – the company that was going to own the new XFL. Over time, he’d liquidate an additional $240 million in WWE stock and use other sources of funding to fulfil his promise.

After months of teasing the revamped XFL in public appearances, the reincarnated XFL was made official in 2018 – with plans announced for a new season in early 2020. The next two years were spent on continuing the groundwork to build as robust a tournament as possible.

One of the biggest steps that the league took was announcing its intention to have shorter, two hour long games as opposed to the standard three hours – this meant that the game needed to be organized in such a way that it delivered a more fast paced, offense oriented approach with lots of TV-worthy moments for the fans, without treading into the territory of sports entertainment that the original XFL did.

Quarterback Landry Jones was the first player that the XFL signed in 2019, following the reveal of the new roster of teams and their logos. Come 2020, the resurgence of the XFL actually seemed more and more likely.

The XFL Goes Bankrupt

While McMahon’s revamped XFL had all the makings of an incredible football league on paper, his plans were once again thwarted by something much worse than ill fate – the coronavirus pandemic.

The first season of the new XFL took off as planned in January 2020, following which play was completely suspended after players started reporting coronavirus symptoms. They eventually tested positive.

During this challenging time, the XFL continued to pay salaries to all its staff and players but ultimately terminated all contracts towards the beginning of what was supposed to be their 2021 season by citing bankruptcy. After several months of litigation in bankruptcy courts, the league was finally put up for sale – though even media houses like ESPN didn’t bite, and instead agreed to air XFL games while considering them a debtor for the screen time. Another condition for this to happen was that the XFL would get new ownership.

This nail in the coffin was ultimately a formality for McMahon, since the bankruptcy agreement filed with the court came with a rider that he would not attempt to buy back the XFL for a third time.

Third Time’s The Charm

In mid-2020, a consortium of investors led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Gerry Cardinale bought the XFL for a relatively paltry sum of $15 million. Considering the unholy cash sink that the league had turned into, it spoke to the volume of mismanagement over the years that the league was finally worth only this much in the end.

The XFL’s brand of football is exciting, and football fans love to see it. It genuinely has everything a football tournament needs to become highly successful. The groundwork that league has put in to test new rules at college football games is absolutely solid, and the world can’t wait to see what it looks like in an actual tournament.

Thankfully, the new owners have a vision for the future and seem to have hired a panel of experts to ensure that the third time is actually the charm for the XFL. We still don’t know when exactly the XFL will return, though a 2023 Spring return has been announced and the league’s social media handles have started greatly engaging with the fans. A few players have already been drafted into the league, which is an encouraging sign that we’ll soon see the XFL making a triumphant return.

The List of XFL Cities For 2023 Is Here

While a date shrouded in mystery in 2023 is a bit far down the line to think about line shopping, it wouldn’t hurt to know the cities that will be represented by the eight teams of the XFL. The Biggest Betting Event in the XFL

The biggest event in the XFL for sports bettors will be the XFL championship Game – when it finally happens, that is. So far, there has only been one champion of the XFL since 2001. It will be an exciting event when bettors will be able to wager in a fan-first, fast-paced professional football final. The sportsbooks we’ve recommended will be at the forefront to realize the full potential of betting on XFL football.
