Like someone said, Gibbs's best days had past him, but he hired smart people at a bunch of spots. After the first year where everyone could see the offense was a disaster he beefed up the staff by hiring Bill Musgraves and then hired Al Saunders a year later.
His second tenure was a success. Two playoff appearances is nothing to fuss about.
I can't agree with that part of you saying it was a disaster. His one back offense was still working. I think what happened was he took on too much just like Mike. Difference is he is smart enough to know. He hired people to make his job a little easier. Just my opinion.

So we have resorted to: SHOULDA.............COULDA.................WOULDA

so one person sharpens another.

I'd call it: "In Gibbs we trust".
Gibbs II was not a disaster: four seasons, two playoff appearances. Year 1 was clearly a look-over, building year. Year 3 was another transition: Saunders as OC for the future.
Gibbs always seemed in calm, hard-working, and in control of the players.

Kinda like the way your sig. starts:
This should be the motto of The Team:
Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.
