The main reason we haven't activated them is because we think that they will DRASTICALLY increase page download times if everyone has one. I know that some of us high speed users tend to forget about the dial up users and so we're just trying to keep the board loading as fast as possible.
I'll throw a poll up on the topic some time today, but what we were thinking was that we would start using avatars like a rank system. So once you got to say 100 posts, then you could have an avatar. That way, active members would get avatars and we wouldn't have a few HUNDRED images bogging down the board.
What do you guys think?

great idea! A popular music board I go to also limits the size of the av so they wont hog the sites bandwidth or take too long to d load. |

What If you got rid of the Happy faces and created a page that allows us to pick diffrent Avator Pics etc..... or set the parameters up for max bandwidth and allow us to browse our harddrive for downloaded stuff.  I just joined maddenplanet.com and they have a nice setup. I attempted to use every Arrington pic I could find on google. Some uploaded and others were just to large and were turned down with error message. 
You know that if given the freedom, some people will go way overboard, therefore you might have to add additional lines to rules    |

... because every smiley in the pack would add up to the filesize of about 2 avatars. Because having 2 avatars on a page will DOUBLE the download time... what do you think 15 does?

It has nothing to do with webspace, bandwidth... we've got tons. It's strictly a matter of limiting the download times of each page. Not everybody has high speed access (god help you people) and avatars REALLY bog down a message board. If a guy has 100 posts... he's an active part of the message board... he deserves the special privilege.

... and I just don't have the time to deal with stuff like that. When the season starts, this site has exclusive content EVERY day as well as the most Redskins headlines that you'll find anywhere on the net. Unfortunately, it all takes time.
This is supposed to be a hobby web site. (yeah right!) I try to limit myself to 40-50 hours a week 
I want the message board to be a place that people come to talk about football, not to look at Redskin avatars. Besides, you're a frequent poster... you'll have an avatar in no time.
I can post a whole page of avatars somewhere for you if you like, so you can get your fix
What's the big draw of the avatar?

Hold up man, go back to bed and wake up like you got some sense. I was just given you options/ideas to play with, its not a must that you run with them! I dont care about a dang on avator! Whats wrong with 80x80 side pics!?
As far as the Avator is concerned I dont really need it.

Why the hostility brother? I meant you no disrespect. I'm just saying that if you give everyone a 5k avatar then a full page thread will be 75k in images plus the text... which on a 56k modem is 15-16 seconds a page. That's all.
So no need to get testy and ask me if I have any 'sense'. I'm just trying to provide a usable forum for everybody, not just people with high speed connections... which seems to make perfectly good sense to me.
I think 100 posts is a good number for earning an avatar. What do you think redskincity? That way only people that post with some regularity get one.
not to mention... I made up our own smileys man... we can't get rid of the smileys.

O.K no disrepect. The Avator that I am talking about sits to the left under your name the pics have a limit of what I would say is 2K 80x80. I was thinking more like IGN.com forum. Why dont you give the viewers an illustrated sample  of what you are talking or not. What type would/could one get? Would it be lets say..... Redskin players like Arrington or Bruce Smiths sack record?

Well my thinking was to limit it to frequent posters and then you can make the avatar a little bigger, say 100x100, and allow for some slightly better quality avatars..
I'll let it be whatever the person wants (within non pornographic boundaries ) And i'll make a few up for people to choose from AND I'll even do a few custom ones as long as I have the reources. So... when you get to 100... you can basicaly tell me what you want. If you have a picture you want 'avatar'ed I'll do it for you.
I figured we'd also have the regular various helmets and redskin logos for people to choose also.
I'm at work and don't have access to all of my files, but I'll post a couple of examples when I get home.
