Redskins Get Okay to Talk With Seattle's Rhodes

The Washington Redskins have been granted permission by the Seattle Seahawks to interview defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes for their vacant head-coaching job. But Rhodes has indicated that he does not want to interview with the Redskins until after Seattle's season is over, a Seahawks official said today.

Redskins officials also were completing arrangements to interview former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel and former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green in the coming days. The Redskins put Fassel, Green and Rhodes atop their list of coaching candidates soon after Steve Spurrier resigned on Tuesday.

The Seahawks face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday in a first-round NFC playoff game. Rhodes's interview with the Redskins apparently could come as soon as Monday if Seattle loses.

Rhodes has been a favorite of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder since serving as the club's defensive coordinator in the 2000 season under former coach Norv Turner. Snyder offered Rhodes the head coaching job after firing Turner with three games remaining in the season. But Rhodes declined, saying that would have been disloyal to Turner. The Redskins released Rhodes from his contract prior to the 2001 season because of a dispute with incoming coach Marty Schottenheimer.

Green was scheduled to interview with the Arizona Cardinals today. Fassel is scheduled to interview with the Cardinals on Saturday.

Redskins officials say they might add more candidates as their search progresses.

Now, this is the news that I want to hear coming from Redskin Park. Sound candidates with NFL experience. Of the names provided, I am pulling for Dennis Green but I am fearful that he will demand too much control for Snyder's liking. Rhodes would be a good pick but we will need a solid OC to utilize the offensive weapons we currently have. It will be interesting to see who is brought and ultimately given the reigns.

I like Rhodes as much as the next guy but I wouldnt hire him because he has had two chances as head man in Green Bay and Philly and he didnt do too well for either of them.

I am not really feeling R Rhodes. What has this man done?? He had one decent year in Phili. He was also .500 in Green Bay.

I want someone who has taken a team to the playoffs on a regular basis. Its a toss up between Green and Fassel.

:hail: my thoughts exactly. plus the fact that rhodes got "fed up" with HC jobs, and wanted to get back to being a coord. we don't need another quitter at the HC position, we need a guy that knows "how" to do this job. as it goes, the proof is in the pudding.

When I originally posted on this issue I was looking at all three candidates with an open mind but the more I have thought about and looked into the three the more I agree that the top two for me would be Fassel and then Green. I still believe that Green is less of an option based on his desire for all the power. If he backs off that demand I might see him as a legit ma for the job. If I had to offer a guess as to who will be our next HC, I think it will be Fassel. That wont bother me at all.
