I believe it says "GSS" and is a memorial patch for Gerald Snyder.

The helmets aren't metallic. They are darker, but they actually look like they are chrome. The uniforms look darker, too. I knew there was something as little different about the way they looked. Here's a good uniform website:

RedskinFreak is exactly right. The patch has GSS is in a bigger font and Hail to the Redskins in a smaller font, with the bravehead at the very top.

Gerald S. Snyder passed away in May of this year.

There's a funny anecdote about him in this year's media guide...

"Before his open heart surgery, Gerry summoned his doctor to his bedside, saying he'd found a lump on the side of his chest. When the doctor lifted the bed sheet for examination, he found a football cradled in Gerald Snyder's arm.

He never lost his sense of humor, or his love for the Redskins."

A lot of how the dark jerseys look depends on the lighting in the stadium and the temperature and how much the players are sweating, etc.

In night games, they look very dark and burgundy -- the color I prefer.

But, if you get into a cool Sunday afternoon, they'll be almost a cherry red.

I think there's a difference in the look between the warm-weather, more-mesh jersey and the more solid, cold-weather jersey.
