Washington Capitals Win Prestigious ABBIE Award

Organization recognized for Hockey School partnership with Arlington public schools

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals were presented with a prestigious ABBIE Award this morning by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington Economic Development Commission. The ABBIE Awards were first presented in 1987 to recognize the best of Arlington’s small businesses, and the Capitals were presented with an ABBIE for their Hockey School partnership with Arlington public schools.

The Capitals launched their successful Hockey School this past season as an initiative to take hockey into Arlington public schools. The program, which was implemented by Capitals director of community relations Elizabeth Wodatch, served as both an introductory tool to the sport and also served as a way for kids to exercise. All six Arlington public schools were involved in the first-year program, and Capitals Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Bradley, Matt Cooke, Boyd Gordon, Mike Green, Viktor Kozlov, Quintin Laing, Michael Nylander, Alex Ovechkin, David Steckel and assistant coach Dean Evason all participated by visiting a school and taking part in a 90-minute interactive clinic.

The Capitals also donated a new set of NHL-branded street hockey equipment to each school for participating in the program, which reached nearly 1,000 students.

Washington Capitals vice president of communications Kurt Kehl accepted the award on behalf of the club at this morning’s banquet at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington.

ABBIE Award recipients are chosen by a Chamber of Commerce selection committee that consists of the Chamber Chairman and previous ABBIE winners. The awards are presented to businesses that consistently provide outstanding quality of service and products, have achieved significant growth or stability over the lifetime of their business and display industry leadership. ABBIE winners focus on giving back to the community and making Arlington a better place to live and work.
