Abe Pollin dies at age 85

ESPN.com news services

Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin, long a fixture on the NBA scene, passed away earlier Tuesday.

The Wizards announced the death in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

In July 2008, Pollin presided over the announcement that the Wizards had re-signed Antawn Jamison. Pollin was in frail health, but still sharp.

"I'm getting a little old and a little sick," Pollin said then. "But I'm still around, and I'm going to be around until we win the ... championship. I'm stubborn and hardheaded."

The Wizards have not come close to a championship, and this season are off to another rocky start at 3-9 and last place in the Southeast division.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

It would be hard to come up with someone who did more for DC sports than Abe Pollin.

The Squire would be the only other one on the list.

Pollin built two arenas and brought two major pro sports to this city.
