Banks as well as a lot of returners were neutralized by the NFL KO return rule change, but in punt returns Banks still retained his explosiveness.

Banks' 23.0 beat Hestor's 21.9 (Not saying Banks is better than Hestor (he's not), but saying that the rules even neutralized Hestor).

One "trick pony?"

1 - Reverse for a TD (called back but counts in the HC's mind when evaluating a player)
2 - Pass for a TD -

That's two tricks :)

No trick, but only Devin Hestor (12) and Ted Ginn (12) had more 20 yard plus returns than Banks (9).

Finally, when Shanny told Banks, he had to make the team as a wide out this is what Shanny said Banks' response was:

I called him in early and I told him he’s going to have to help us at the wide receiver position as well if he’s going to make this football team,” Shanahan said. “He accepted the challenge and came [to camp] in excellent shape.”

Shanahan said Banks has gained approximately 10 pounds since last season, when he had 155 pounds on his 5-foot-7 frame. He saw time at each receiver spot during minicamp, but will have to battle 11 others in training camp if he’s to have a shot.

This is no guarantee that Banks will make the team, but what Shanny is saying, hardly speaks of Banks as a "one trick" pony.

With all that being said, Robinson could be the key whether or not Banks makes it. If Robinson can return punts with the explosiveness of Banks and I think he can, you might end up being right.

What is your latest who stays - who goes?
BB isn't Hester... BUT is Hester like.. Speed kills and we can't ignore all of his tds as a room and second year in preseason and regular including every one of the ones that were called back- as if the flagged player impacted BB scoring.
As a wide out he isnt as big as Hester but has the go deep fast potential, so long as other wrs comand respect of the dbs he can burn a lot of coverages.
I'm a bone head all time fan of the little guy.. I hope he makes it.more so then maybe even a player or two I've loved for much much longer then Lil BB.

John Keim:

Vet in trouble: Banks and Austin. If Robinson shows that he can help in the return game and from scrimmage because of his speed, then both these players are likely gone. I like Austin’s footwork, especially in the slot and as a punt returner. But he’s not a burner and others can potentially do what he does. Armstrong is helped by the fact that he, too, is a good special teamer and an excellent blocker. But he’s coming off a sub-par year (for a few reasons) and needs to re-prove himself.

I agree with Keim in his assessment, but like Tandler, he sees Aldrick a possible heir to the return game. Shanny likes Robinson so much that he elevated him to the 53 at the end of the season when a team tried to sign him from the practice squad.

I think that Austin is out because he is not a burner in the return game.

Armstrong is the big question mark. If he can start connecting with RGIII with the deep ball like he did with McNabb, he is in. I am not confident about him

Banks - Better hands than Armstrong. As fast as Armstrong. Route running - even. Mr. Gadget - Banks (although Armstrong did a reverse on a KO). Coverage teams - Armstrong

John Keim's 6:
Projected starters: Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss

Key reserves: Leonard Hankerson, Josh Morgan, Anthony Armstrong, Aldrick Robinson

Out:
Terrence Austin, Brandon Banks.

He likes Lance Lewis as a project - sounds like practice squad.

Rich Tandler's 6:
(6): Anthony Armstrong, Pierre Garçon, Leonard Hankerson, Josh Morgan, Santana Moss, Aldrick Robinson

Out: Brandon Banks, Terrence Austin, Darius Hanks, Brian Hernandez, Lance Lewis, Samuel Kirkland

Tandler's 6 is the same as Keim's 6.

well i guess we need to see if Hanktime ends up on the PUP list before we cut banks right?

when ever BB touches the ball there is a chance for magic.. id have a hard time cutting loose that kind of talent- and speed.

We have seen how Shanny is trying to find different ways for BB to get the ball. I think that Shanny will have a hard time cutting him. That is why he called him out in public and told him, he needs to make the team as a wide out. He has gianed weight and he showed up at RGIII's camp, so he knows what he needs to do to make it. If he shows that he can play wideout. I believe that he is on the team.

This is what I have been telling folks, that the guy caught 123 passes in two years of college. He can catch the ball. He was weak at route running when he came into the league, but few rookie WRs aren't.

They keep saying that Banks has no skills as a receiver. They also say if he had skills Shanny would have used him.

Mike Shannahan on Banks as a receiver (11/18/10):
“That’s been our goal all along,” Shanahan said. “Banks has some very good receiver skills. He’s got very good hands, he’s tough, and the more consistent he can be in practice -- it’s been tough because he got hurt -- but we would like to get him more involved.”
Banks tore a ligament in his left knee in 2010 and required surgery. He didn’t miss a game, but struggled to regain his effectiveness. The knee continued to bother Banks off and on last preseason, and during much of the regular season. That kept Shanahan from using him as a receiver. Instead, he made the team as a returns specialist.

Brandon Banks on the health of his knee (6/13/12):
“I want to be on the offensive side of the ball to help contribute and make big plays,” said Banks, who says his knee is 100 percent healed. “Hopefully I can go out there and make plays. … What I’m known to do is running. By the knee bothering me [last year] I was limited from being 100 percent and being fast as I can be, so I’m very excited to get back feeling the way I felt when I first got here.”

Knee is 100% healthy - no excuses! It's time for Banks to show us what he can do at the wide out position.

Thanks Red One, I didn't know BB was carrying an injury and that Shanny seems to feel he can be an effective wide out.

Hey SLR, check out Banks' college highlights. Forget about the TDs and the yardage (its college competition), but check out how he catches the ball - with his hands - not trapped on his chest.

That first hitch pass on the video is low, but BB snags it cleanly with his hands. This is what Shanny is seeing when he says the guy has - not good hands - but "very good hands." :)

If Brandon has improved his route running, he will make a heck of a receiver. As the 5th or 6th guy, he won't have to catch a lot of passes, but Shanny will have devised more ways to get him the ball that teams will respect him when he is in the line up.

In minicamp, Banks saw time at each receiver spot and impressed the coaching staff. He’s also reportedly packed 10 more pounds onto his 5 foot 7, 155-pound frame.

“My mindset is to contribute at wide receiver, show the coaches I can run a route, catch the ball and make plays without a punt return or kick return,” Banks said. “That’s my main concern. I’m just trying to get a connection with the quarterback, so hopefully I can be here this year.”

Meet Banks the wide receiver!
