1nik, Hogster, why is Gomes on your 53? He is appearing on everybody's 53 including mine, but I only put him on because he looked promising last year. I am finding it hard to keep him on my list as I prepare to redo it. It seems to me that every time, I look up, Gomes is missing tackles or hurt on the ground. I have never seen him make a hard tackle. I recognize that my perception might be wrong here. Thoughts? Anybody else, please feel free to weigh in.

Mainly I think he makes it by default. The guys behind him are just not very good. Jordan Bernstine doesn't look like he's ready to play in the NFL. I expect Reed Doughty to see plenty of time on Special Teams and in the secondary. I think he showed some promise last year. He came in lighter this season. And, with the injury to Merriweather & Jackson still getting up to speed, it will be hard to go without 5 Safeties.

Red One - Who are you considering replacing him with?

To clear waivers is 24 hours right? Do you have to send notice to every team? U can't jus "sneak" someone on to the ps I'm assuming, so how's it work? Teams report to the NFL about any cuts and/or releases and its up to the teams to keep an eye on the waiver wire or what ever?

Last's Year's 53 Final Roster before the start of the season

Tandler:
Quote:
They managed to keep four tight ends and seven wide receivers by going tight with eight on the offensive line and carrying two quarterbacks. One of the eight O-linemen was rookie free agent tackle Willie Smith, who they knew would not be ready to play until the latter stages of the season. The gamble did not work out too well as injuries hit along the line and they had to call up Maurice Hurt from the practice squad and sign Tyler Polumbus off of the street.

The spot for return specialist Brandon Banks came from the defense with the line on that side of the ball going tight as well.

The lesson to learn here is that there is no rigid number that needs to be kept at each position. The last few roster spots, where decision are made based on special teams, potential, or just keeping the best football players, can throw everything out of whack.

Teams had 33 when guys played both ways a lot. I think George Allen had 40 Redskins.

Players who are waived when paperwork notifying the league of their release is filed. Their name then goes on the "Waiver Wire" that all teams have.
Each team is ranked based on record. Worst team has 1st priority. Teams have 24 hours to put in a claim. The team with highest priority who claims a player gets the rights to that player.

In order to clear waivers, no team puts in a claim. If multiple teams put in claims, the "worst" team wins so to speak.

Question you also have to ask is "Does it make more sense to keep a guy who will be inactive on gameday for depth or do you keep a guy who will play each and every week."

Shanahan said he’ll keep more than 25 players on one side of the ball if that’s what needs to happen. So there’s a chance he’ll keep 26 offensive players, 24 on defense and three specialists. He also said he won’t keep a player just as insurance in case Trent Williams or Fred Davis fail another drug test and receive a year-long suspension.

“I trust both of them,” Shanahan said. “I’d be very disappointed if they let me down or their teammates down. I really don’t think along those lines.”

Quote:
That Shanahan is not locked in to a 25-25-3 structure means the Redskins could keep 26 on offense to help ease the strain of the injuries at running back and/or on the offensive line. Assuming the “best 53” (as Shanahan likes to say) doesn’t include a ninth offensive lineman, he could keep running back Alfred Morris AND tight ends Chris Cooley and Logan Paulsen AND a sixth wide receiver.

Of course, if Shanahan keeps 26 offensive players, then he’d keep only 24 on defense. So when analyzing the roster decision-making process, we have to consider the merits of keeping someone like Cooley against, say, safety DeJon Gomes or a linebacker such as Bryan Kehl, who can contribute on special teams.

The flexibility makes speculating about the 53 difficult. There are so many pieces to the puzzle. Overall, though, Shanahan must cut some players who are good enough to play in the league. That’s a sign of improvement.

“The better football team you are, at the end, a lot of times guys will be picked up,” Shanahan said. “If you don’t have guys being picked up, that’s not a good sign. At the end of the day, if you have two, three, four, five guys getting picked up, that means you probably have a lot of depth.”

The IR Rule and Redskins Running Backs

Quote:
Can the Redskins afford to keep all four backs on the roster if two of them aren't going to be healthy to start the season? It's hard to imagine, especially with the crowd they have at positions like wide receiver and tight end, and the injury questions they have on the offensive line. If Hightower and Helu can't show them within the next two weeks that they're at least able to offer something, one of them may end up cut or on IR for the season. Or they may end up keeping both and having to cut someone like tight end Chris Cooley in a roster crunch.

No limit on IR heads. Think Packers in their Super Bowl Season. They had 16 of them (that year was uncapped). There are salary cap ramifications, I'll defer that part to 1nik.
