Playing Not for Pay But Love of Game
Virginia Rage Makes Minor League Debut
By Alan Goldenbach, Washington Post

Al Ludgood wants to make a living playing football. When the New Orleans Saints told him last month that he needed more game experience to develop his skills, Ludgood went to the Internet. There, he found a fledgling minor league football team in Loudoun County willing to give him a tryout.

Ecstatic about the opportunity, Ludgood quit his job as a security guard at a hospital in Mobile, Ala., and drove 32 hours to Sterling to try out as a punter. Along the way, he slept in his truck and called his fiancée back in Mobile to let her know he was okay.

"I'm a fool for football," Ludgood said.

Ludgood, 29, is now a member of the Virginia Rage -- a first-year member of the four-year-old, 101-team North American Football League (NAFL).
